So, if you're reading this and aren't into mail but want to be, let me tell you where you can go to start getting into it. The two sites I use the most are sendsomething.net and swap-bot.com. Both sites are pretty awesome and you can exchange anything you want with people.
Sendsomething is more open, you post your profile and address (its only public to those on the site and logged in, so its at your own risk, of course) and you can write anything you want in your profile, like what do you want to receive? Are you looking for penpals? Do you love postcards? Things like that!
Swap-bot is more organized. Your address is only made public to those who you're partnered to swap with. You can join different swaps of all sorts, electronic swaps (via email), "flat mail" (letters, postcards, etc) or packages. They're organized into different categories and each swap (hosted by other members of the site) has different rules and requirements.
You could also join the Letter Writers Alliance, where I've met two cool penpals through. You're matched only when you request to be matched with someone and your address is private except to the person they match you with.
So go, get started with mailing!
I really wanted to share two things though. One is a package I received from The Missive Maven (check out her blog, its very inspiring to those interested in snail mail!), it was from a swap-bot swap called "My Stationery Is Not Stationary" (hee), and she SPOILED me. She was so thoughtful in everything she picked to send me, and it brought me much glee. Look how pretty the envelpe was:

And look at all the cool stationery that was inside:

And I would be a bad penpal if I didn't mention this, which arrived from my good friend Colleen. Now, just to show you how cool penpalling is (seriously), Colleen and I met on a knitting website, Ravelry, in a penpalling group. We started writing, and became instant friends. We not only exchange handwritten letters (long ones, at that), but we PM each other through Ravelry often. Also? We're so close, she was on the top of my invite list at my wedding. Not only did her and her husband John come to our wedding, but she played the flute for us as we walked down the aisle, and signed our papers. She's so sweet. Anyway, this letter came from her today and the envelope made me giggle:

So, get to it! Now, its time for me to write some letters!
