What is art?

So, I went out today to run some errands. Will and I went to the farmer's market up at Masonville mall, which was nice, though expensive. Prior to that we stopped at Chapters as we wanted to check out a few things. We wanted a book on Ontario Birds, and looked over a couple and picked what we thought would be best for us. We love watching the birds off our balcony (and in the forest) so now we have a sort of field guide to take with us, as we often wonder what certain birds are.

I also wanted to pick up the most recent issue of Juxtapoz. I used to read this magazine all the time, but stopped a while ago since magazine's are so friggin' expensive and why do I need magazines when i have the internet? However, Kirsten Vangsness (Garcia on Criminal Minds, though Juxtapoz spelled her last name incorrectly as VANSGNESS... eh, I can forgive them) interviews Matthew Gray Gubler (Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds), about his art and inspiration, etc... his art is a-freakin-mazing, inspiring and beatiful. Check out his website to see for yourself!

The reason I am blogging about this is because there were two quotes in particular that made me swoon and go YES YES YES! (um, not in that way, mind you) that I really wanted to share here, because it got me thinking about what art is and isn't, and inspired me to sit down and draw, since I haven't in a long time. The reason I haven't in a while is because everything just started looking the same to me. I'd draw the same shapes and the same people, and it was starting to annoy and frustrate me. Thats not a good excuse. Just draw! Whether you're a trained "artist" or not, pick up a pen (or pencil... or crayon... or marker... or anything that makes a mark!) and a piece of paper (or anything you can make a mark on!) and draw. Don't be afraid to make mistakes! Don't be afraid if it looks like shit, just be inspired by anything and everything around you and just freakin' draw!

I will laeve you with the quotes that inspired me:

"Art shouldn't be about training or materials or the ability to afford expensive paints and fancy schools. It should be about making something out of nothing... If you really want to make something, you'll make it with whatever tools are available."

And at the end of the interview: "Luckily I don't believe in pressure, fear or failure. Only smiles, monster and magic."

And with that, I'm going to go draw!

My husband always teases me about my pen fetish, saying that all I really need to do my **real** writing is a crayon and a paper bag. He's right, of course.....

"Monster and magic." Excellent!

Great post and right on target about the nature of art of course. Though that will not stop me from continuing on the quest for the "best art supplies" ;).

I agree with that too :) Though I wish I didn't feel pressured or a sense of fear and failure.
