Knitting In Public

Will and I often go out simply to get out of the house to knit. Since I work from home 95% of the time, its good for both of us. Often we go to our local Starbucks (which ROCKS!), as theres plenty of room, wonderful employees, and just a nice chill environment.

Yesterday evening was one of these times. It was New Years, I was sick during Christmas, and Will sadly caught the same sick so hasn't been feeling up to par the last few days (refer to his "forced smile" in the above photo), so we didn't do anything for New Years Eve. We stayed home, watched tv, ate good food (I baked like a mad-woman!), listened to podcasts, and knit. We're a fairly boring crowd, we're easily entertained, I guess. So, we decided we should get out and do something on New Years Day, right? Thankfully, our Starbucks was open.

Because of the location and its size, this particular Starbucks is almost always busy. Yesterday it was not. At one point we were the only people there besides the employees. Later in the evening before we left, a man about our age, and his father came in and sat down near us since we were in the "comfy chair section". For a few moments I noticed the father watching me knit. Finally he asked me what I was working on. I told him it was a sock for Will and he said he was just baffled about the number of different ways people can hold and complete their knitting. He then started talking to me and telling me that as a young boy he knew how to knit but hasn't knit anything in a few years. The last thing he knit was a scarf for a friend.

Since I'm addicted to knitting and fiber-craft (and non fiber-craft for that matter), it makes me very happy to have random people ask me questions about knitting, or start reminiscing about a time that they knit. A lot of the time when people ask me about it, they remember someone from their past (their mother/grandmother/aunt/etc) knitting, or trying to teach them to knit. Its really interesting to hear of all the stories and memories that a simple "craft" (which to me is more of a way of life than a craft) can bring out in people.

This post really doesn't have a point, most of mine don't, I just like to ramble and rant, but I just wanted to throw this out there and ask anyone possibly reading to share some of their knitting in public stories.

Happy 2011, folks!

Just so you know that you are not alone, my mate and myself take our spinning wheels into cafes and bars twice a week and spend a few hours knitting and spinning...love peoples reactions to seeing a guy with long hair and beard knitting a lace shawl:-)

I love how some old people think it's quaint that we knit. LOL

And you had to put in an obligatory hottie shot, didn't you?
